Circles and Affinity Groups
Circles and Affinity Groups function as support groups. They may be geographically based or interest based.
The Long Haulers
Long Haul Affinity Group: Long Haul originally came together as an
affinity group to support us in Non-Violent Direct Action. As part of
1000 Grandmothers, we focus on climate justice, grounded in a
deep appreciation for the spiritual basis of political action. Since
the group started in the summer of 2019, we’ve had a few changes
in membership. Monthly meetings deepen our understanding of
political action through land acknowledgment, spiritual inspiration,
grounding, personal sharing, book discussion, review of actions any
of us have participated in, and planning for upcoming actions.
We’ve gotten to know each other deeply through personal sharing
and focused discussion.
What we experience together: safety in a group, political/spiritual/emotional inspiration from peers, encouragement in personal and political growth, challenging old ideas while exploring new ones, supporting engagement in ways that work best for each of us, offering positive feedback and appreciation, celebrating what’s good, nurturing each other with laughter, connection and love.
This photo is from 2023 and shows all of the current members. We have fun!

The San Francisco Circle

In November 2019, a few Grandmothers decided to start a circle
for members who lived in San Francisco. At the Fall convening,
the Circle was announced and the official cohort began. Soon
after, they took their first action together, car-pooling to the
East Bay for a public meeting in Pinole about dredging the Bay.
Six years later, the Circle has grown and become very active. As
Grandmothers, we see our Circle as a way to strengthen our
sense of community and support each other through these
challenging times..
-
Many of us enjoy participating in non-violent direct actions for Climate Justice and a democratic society.
-
The Bay View Hunter's Point Working Group grew out of the SFCircle and supporting the BVHP Community continues to be an important focus for many members.
-
We also work on legislative issues, attending SF Supervisor and Commission meetings, meeting with individual supervisors, and advocating for local climate justice legislation when appropriate. Several of us are currently involved in the Make Polluters Pay Working Group.
-
We try to incorporate self-education in our meetings whenever possible, deepening our understanding about how to build a sustainable and peaceful world.

The Green Grannies
Green Grannies is a 1000 Grandmothers circle/affinity
group with members involved in a variety of work like
Make Polluters Pay, Pension divestment, and general, in the
streets, resistance to the current state of the world. One of
our main projects has been understanding and educating
others on the dire effects on climate and people of
militarism, especially by the US. We've recently moved that
work to an Anti-Militarism Working Group so that other
Grandmothers can get involved. We've demonstrated with
veterans and other Grandmothers against Fleet Week,
created an educational slideshow and are developing a further program of work. For more info text Patty Campbell at 510-684-1167.

The Redwood Circle, centered in the East Bay, serves as a "home base" within the organization, while our members are also active on a number of GM working groups and committees. We've developed a strong sense of trust and community with one another, communicating and sharing regularly between meetings and engaging in collective action when possible: hearings, protests, postcarding, etc. The Circle meets monthly on Zoom & occasionally in person. It is not open to new members at this time.

The Singing Group
Calling all Grandmothers who like to sing! Join us to
sing a 1000 Grandmothers' evolving collection of
resistance ballads, marching chants, and healing
songs; additions, suggestions, and new-learners
welcome. In good weather, we meet monthly
(4th Sundays, 2-4 pm) at Ohlone Park in Berkeley,
on the grass near the corner of Hearst and Grant s
treets. Some of us will take these songs into the streets for actions; some will not. No matter! We all love to sing! For further info contact: Bonnie bonniebkr@comcast.net
or Marcia mar4me@gmail.com
