Working groups may be either project-specific or have an ongoing focus. They are initiated by a group of 3 or more Grandmothers who want to work together in the name of 1000 Grandmothers. Before Grandmothers initiate a new working group, the focus needs to be communicated to the Coordinating Committee for finalization and support. This process of forming and bringing the initiative to the Coordinating Committee will help with communication and make sure we are all on the same page. When possible, it is good to have a designated point person to keep information flowing between the Working Group, the Engagement Committee, the Communications Committee, and the Coordinating Committee.
If you are interested in joining an existing working group, please email: workinggroupinfo@gmail.com
Put the name of the Working Group in the Subject Line.

The Art Working Group, which is part of the NVDA, creates art that brings attention to our message of protecting and healing the Earth through fighting the Climate Crisis and advocating for Environmental Justice. We create banners, puppets, signs, parasols, and street murals to support NVDA actions and other efforts that further climate and environmental justice.

Make Polluters Pay Working Group

The Make Polluters Pay Working Group is collaborating with a strong, well-organized state-wide campaign to  pass the California Make Polluters Pay bill.  This campaign is VERY important re shifting the cost of climate disasters from the people in devastated communities to the fossil fuel industry.  The bill mandates the state government assess the cost of the climate crisis and charge polluters to create a “superfund” to pay for costs they have created.   This is, understandably, a very popular bill.  A similar bill has already been passed in two states, and there's tremendous momentum to pass one in California as well.

                            Bayview Hunters Point Working Group

The Bayview-Hunters Point (BVHP) Working Group is committed to

supporting BVHP community members in their efforts to promote

environmental and social justice, which are inherently connected.

As allies of community-based organizations in BVHP, we advocate for

clean air, land, and water-ways in the district to ensure the health

being of its residents. We also work to hold polluters

accountable for the toxins and pollutants that have

plagued this community for years while maintaining

a strong presence at City Hall and commission

meetings. Although our focus is on the BVHP district,

we recognize that we are one city without dividing

lines when it comes to environmental hazards

and contaminants. We seek support for upcoming

actions through the 1000 Grandmothers Town Crier.

Anti-militarism and the Climate Crisis Working Group

Ongoing horror over the genocide in Gaza, as well as the destructive

role of US military aggression in Asia, the Caribbean and Latin America,

Africa and on our southern border – everywhere we look--US military

aggression is a key element in the destruction of our planet, humanity

and life itself. This working group is coordinating with others who

protest the glorification of the US military and its contribution to both

climate chaos and environmental destruction, including, but not

limited to protesting against San Francisco’s Fleet Week air shows.

The Legislative Working Group

The 1000 Grandmothers believe holding legislators accountable for policies that affect climate -

particularly those that support the fossil fuel industry - is an important way to have an impact. The 1000 Grandmothers Legislative Working Group helps to pass pending legislation that will mitigate

and/or adapt to the Climate Crisis.  We also oppose legislation that undercuts efforts to address this

problem. To learn more about the legislative working group.

NVDA Nonviolent Direct Action Work Group

When Grans are asked to participate in an endorsed action initiated by our allies, or ourselves, the task of the NVDA is to talk with action organizers, and make sure the proposed plan will keep participating Grans safe.  Information about exactly what we are being asked to do is gathered by the NVDA Action Committee, to determine whether we have the capacity & interest among our members. This may involve a physical inspection of the action site, and the recruitment of Gran volunteers to serve as marshals, liaisons, group leaders, puppeteers, and singers during the event. After an action, we will recap the events, to determine what went well, and what might be done differently in the future.

The NVDA strongly encourages all Grans to attend at

least one training in best practices for non-violent direct

action. These trainings are held periodically with our

allies & publicized to our membership.

We also educate Grans in the use of the Signal app for

more secure communication, both to publicize events,

and to work out details before and during

actions.
